Further Activities

In 2018, Mikai performed Kalevi AHO’s clarinet concerto with the Geidai Philharmonia Orchestra, Tokyo; led by YAMASHITA Kazufumi; in the morning concert at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2022, he performed Salvatore SCIARRINO’s clarinet concerto “Che sai guardiano, della notte?” as Japan premiere at the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra’s Discovery Series concert, conducted by SHIMONO Tatsuya. Added to these activities, he has also joined the Saito Kinen Orchestra.
As to his grant history, he became a recipient of the overseas training grant of the Hironao Seki Memorial Culture and Arts Foundation in 2018.
Currently, Mikai is a part time teacher at Elisabeth University of Music and Hiroshima Bunka Gakuen, as well as a member of The Narmen Clarinet Ensemble and the principal clarinet of the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.

Repertoire

Mikai has been working on a wide range of repertoire from works written by Romantic composers, such as Mozart and Beethoven, to those written by contemporary composers, including Jörg WIDMANN and Kalevi AHO. He excels in clear expressions of harmony and rhythms, led by his base of musicality, which is layers of his childhood experiences of playing percussion, piano, and guitar.
