Synopsis

In Rome, 1800. Cavaradossi, a celebrated singer Tosca’s lover, is working on his painting in a church. Suddenly, his friend Angelotti, an escaped prisoner, enters the church seeking help. Cavaradossi tries to assist Angelotti without alerting Tosca. Still, he is caught by Scarpia, the chief of police. Tosca begs Scarpia to save Cavaradossi’s life. In exchange for Cavaradossi’s freedom, Scarpia proposes a deal: she must give herself to him. When Scarpia tries to embrace Tosca, she stabs him to death and rushes to Cavaradossi to escape together, but unexpected obstacles lie ahead.

About the Production

The Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Opera BOX is a popular series that has been running since 2004, which allows people to enjoy opera performances in a casual atmosphere. This series has received critical acclaim for its diverse cast, including young artists who have won prizes at the Tokyo Music Competition and seasoned singers who are top names in Japan. Additionally, the series boasts experienced and in-demand stage directors and creators, along with a children’s chorus and little actors who participate through an open application process. This year, we are bringing this series to Tachikawa for the first time after 10 years as a part of the Next Creation Program undertaken by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. For this production, elementary, middle, and high school students who will join the workshops in Tachikawa through an open application process will challenge themselves to create a full-fledged opera, working together with professionals. The production will involve elementary and middle school students for a children’s chorus and a crafts-making team, as well as high school students for a chorus and a percussion ensemble. The show stars soprano SAKODA Miho, who has been attracting a lot of attention, as a title role. And MIYASATO Naoki, who has achieved coveted recognition in the opera world in Japan, sings Cavaradossi. The stage will be filled with youth and passion that will undoubtedly captivate you.
