Part 1

Chamber Music

Kaija SAARIAHO (Finland) was a composer with an overwhelming presence to be loved and coveted by the world for her graceful sound.

To pay homage to her, who passed away in June 2023 at the age of 70, we will feature one of her works and pieces written by composers connected with her: a new work (international co-commission) by YOKOYAMA Mioko, an emerging young composer based in Finland, who Saariaho had great hopes for, and another new work by Juha T. KOSKINEN, who has a bond with Japan and had studied under Saariaho.

Music to be performed

Juha T. KOSKINEN: Lacrime di Izanami [Koto Solo] (World Premiere)

Kaija SAARIAHO: Terra Memoria [String Quartet]

YOKOYAMA Mioko: From the ground [String Quartet] (Commission, World Premiere)

* The performance order has been changed as above from the initial announcement.

Part 2

KAGUYA—the daughter tree (Commission, World Premiere)

Performed in English with Japanese surtitles

This new stage production is a collaboration between Josephine STEPHENSON, a composer drawing attention in France and the U.K., and MORIYAMA Kaiji, a versatile artist leading the dance world. Embracing a brand new worldview inspired by the ancient Japanese folktale “Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter)” and poems by YOSANO Akiko, and unique sounds by merging Renessance melancholic songs and the 21st century’s experimental pop tunes, this captivating work will go around the world after its premiere in Japan.
