Music Program TOKYO Workshop Workshop! Convivial Project Professional Training for Musicians 4. How to build musical language—“Music in Mind” in practice: a person-centered approach to interactive music making Lectures and Training for the Art Activities leading to Social Inclusion
“Where language is beyond some individuals, music becomes that language.”
One challenge often faced by people living with dementia is verbal communication. Some people may struggle connecting the sounds and meanings of words with any visual clues they see in front of them. This can inhibit people living with dementia to express themselves eventually leading them to be disconnected from society.
We humans are social creatures who long to build relationships with other people. Where verbal language and communication is no longer possible for some people living, we must endeavor to find alternative methods of communication that are familiar, allow for expression, and are beyond words. Music allows us to maintain social connections with others even when their language function is deteriorating.
In this training program, we learn the essentials of "Music in Mind," a music-making program developed by Manchester Camerata for people with dementia and their carers.

There are a growing need and increasing attention for activities which spotlight the diversity in the arts in recent years. Such movement introduced legislation for promoting art activities for people with disabilities. At the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, our goal is set to realize a society with diversity and conviviality, which requires a higher quality of art activities. And those art activities need the right moment to be developed by raising and looking into the issues. Taking these perspectives into account, we have set up lectures and discussions open to the public with experts of each theme as lecturers and trainers. Understanding and organizing the current situation and the issues of this field will lead us to seek how cultural administrators should confront the situation and issues and how we can deliver higher quality of art activities.
In this training program, we welcome musicians from Manchester Camerata, a British chamber orchestra that has been delivering unique and cutting-edge community-based music making activities. Musicians from Manchester Camerata will share the principles of their work which develop socially inclusive arts activities. On the second day, we will have a hands-on workshop and find out the necessary skills by reviewing the workshop experience.
