Musical Careers

Profile KAMIMURA Ayano has been acclaimed for her performances with orchestras, and with chamber music ensembles inside and outside Japan. In addition to playing modern cello, she currently performs using period instruments and historical playing methods. She is one of the rare cellists expanding her range of activity as a leading player of both modern and period instruments.
Kamimura started the cello at the age of six. After graduating from the Music Department of Toho Girls’ Senior High School, she completed the Soloist Diploma Course of Toho Gakuen College. She went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, Musik Akademie Basel, and Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (early music department).
Kamimura won 2nd Prize of the String section at the 5th Tokyo Music Competition. She won 1st Prize (strings division) as well as the Romanian Embassy Prize at the 4th Romanian International Music Competition in Japan. She was awarded 2nd Prize in the 80th Japan Music Competition, and 1st Prize as well as NHK Prize in the 65th Student Music Concours of Japan (university division). She also received the top prize in the Treviso (Italy) International Music Competition.
Kamimura has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Tokyo Philharmonic (conducted by KOBAYASHI Ken-ichiro), Yomiuri Nippon Symphony (SHIMONO Tatsuya), City of Kyoto Symphony (SUZUKI Masato), Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia (Frank BRALEY), and Symphony Orchestra Basel (Christoph GEDSCHOLD).
She has performed chamber music with internationally renowned musicians such as FUKASAWA Ryoko, TOKUNAGA Tsugio, and KASHIMOTO Daishin.
Kamimura has also appeared in many music festivals, including the Kirishima International Music Festival, Miyazaki International Music Festival, Kitakyushu International Music Festival, Spring Festival in Tokyo, Sendai Classical Music Festival, Le Pont International Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival (U.S.A.), Piatigorsky International Cello Festival (U.S.A.), Cello Biennale Amsterdam (Netherlands), and Monighetti & Friends (Switzerland).
Kamimura studied cello with KUMAZAWA Masaki, INOUE Masayo, MORI Hakuro, TSUTSUMI Tsuyoshi, Arto NORAS, Ivan MONIGHETTI, and Sol GABETTA. She studied chamber music with HARADA Koichiro, TOKUNAGA Tsugio, and Quartet Excelsior; and period cello with Christophe COIN.
Kamimura was a member of the first class of the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy. She is a founding member of the early music ensemble Musica Amici. Currently she is also active as a member of the trio Tripartie (with violinist YONEMOTO Kyoko and pianist KIKUCHI Yoko) and as a member of Bach Collegium Japan.
