Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Performing Arts Creation Project/International Co-production Opera "Only the Sound Remains"

Kaija SAARIAHO's opera "Only the Sound Remains" (2016) was written, inspired by Noh dramas: "Tsunemasa" (First Part) and "Hagoromo" (Second Part). This newly directed version makes its Japan debut as an international co-production which includes La Biennale di Venezia.

Notice to our patrons who are attending this performance

Please follow the below measures to help prevent the COVID-19 spread. Your understanding and cooperation are much appreciated.


⁃ We ask you not to come to the venue if you seem to have symptoms such as a fever, cough, sneezing, sore throat, or simply not feeling well.


⁃ Wear a face mask to cover your nose and mouth. Please show consideration for fellow audience members.


⁃ Strictly follow the precautions against infectious diseases such as the cough etiquette and washing and disinfecting your hands frequently.


⁃ Our staff members conduct temperature screening with thermal imaging cameras for all those who are entering the venue. If you have a fever of 37.5°C/99.5°F or higher, you are not allowed to enter the venue.


⁃ No beverage is sold in the Main Hall area.


⁃ Show your ticket to the usher. Then tear off the stub by yourself and put it in the box.


⁃ We do not hand out program leaflets and such printed materials. Please pick them up by yourself from specific areas.


⁃ The cloakroom is not available.


⁃ We do not accept flowers and gifts for the artists. Nor can you give them directly to the artists.


⁃ Allow enough time to get into the venue.


About the Work

Kaija SAARIAHO’s “Only the Sound Remains” is her fourth opera based on Noh dramas. SAARIAHO, one of the leading composers today, made its world premiere in 2016 with great success in many western countries.

This newly directed version is an international co-production which includes La Biennale di Venezia featuring a fantastic cast and crew. The up and coming director Aleksi BARRIÈRE, and the top renowned and talented choreographer MORIYAMA Kaiji. Please join us for its long-awaited premiere in Japan!

Regarding this performance, the tickets will be on sale by holding seats at about half-capacity based on “Roadmap to Overcoming COVID-19” set by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Please note that we may ask you to move from your reserved seat to another upon entering the venue depending on other governmental policies.


If the capacity limit is eased, we will sell additional tickets. In case the capacity restriction is tightened again considering the situation of the COVID-19 spread, the tickets additionally sold have to be refunded, and additional ticket holders will not be able to attend the performance.
