Synopsis

Act I

Ancient Beijing. Old king Timur and his slave Liu have been wandering since their defeat in war. Timur is reunited with his son Calaf and they are happy to know they are well. Everybody prostrates themselves before Princess Turandot who appears silently. Calaf is enthralled by the princess’ beauty. He learns that if he can solve the 3 riddles, she will become his, so he tries to solve them.

Act Ⅱ

The three ministers think back on the foreign princes who havelost their lives because of the princess. People gather in thesquare in front of the palace where Turandot announces that“if he cannot solve the riddles, he will have to pay with his life”.Calaf, however, successfully solves the riddles. Calaf present thefluttered princess with a riddle. He asks her what his name is.

Act Ⅲ

The princess orders the citizens to find out the foreign prince’sname, without sleep. Calaf sings his own determination throughthe aria (Nessun dorma ? Nobody shall sleep). Timur and Liuare captured. Liu declares “I am the only one who knows theyoung man’s name” and takes her own life. After everyone leaves,Calaf declares his love for the princess and kisses her. Tu
